"Silent" spam

Via digg.com, I found this post by "Kathy" where she describes what she calls Silent Spam: People who just sign up with forums so that they have the link to their site in their forum profile. This appears to be relatively effective, since forums often have links to the list of users in prominent places.

Incidentally, we had such a case just a few hours later. Some weirdo has been trying to post about his true perpetual motion machine (no, really - you can't make these things up ...) before. He used the handy abbreviation "ddnpmfng" (and if he was successul elsewhere, that should be enough to find him - don't want to give him any more publicity here), which makes a nice filter criterion.

First, he tried to post a harmless (but content-free) comment, with his URL as a signature. When our spam filter rejected that, he tried to update his profile with that URL and a longish drivel about his machine. Fortunately, Geeklog now also filters profiles for spam.

So, while this was more of an amusing case, you may want to check your user list for suspicious entries on occasion ...
