Keep your scripts up to date!

A lot of the web spam (comments, trackbacks, forum posts, story submissions) we're currently seeing is misusing other people's websites to redirect to the spammer's actual site. TWiki, a link script named xLinks, and something called simpleforum are the most popular among spammers right now, it seems.

So, if you're running your own site based on some script: Please check for updates on regular intervals - and install them!

Otherwise, your site may fall victim to a spammer sooner or later. Every software has bugs and bugs on web applications will be exploited mercilessly.

A note about the "simpleforum" above: Not sure if it's the same one as the first result for "simpleforum" in Google. The spamvertized URL in question works (i.e. redirects to the spammer's site), but trying to chop off portions of the URL only gives me 403s. An odd setup ...

Oh, and all the spam that uses these methods is for the usual pills and drugs. I don't have the time right now to dig deeper, but here's a couple of the spammer's actual URLs (they may belong to several people actually):

me-pharmacy.com (the site header reads "My-Pharmacy", though), supervi.info, lightsunfun.net (cute idea to use a lock icon as the site's favicon ...).

Today's preferred method is using some of the lesser-known URL redirect services (you've probably heard of tinyurl.com). Our spammer friend here currently uses urlbounce.com, shortlink.co.uk, and snipit.info
