Does the world really need Yet Another Spam Blog? Well, probably not. However, I found myself in need for a place to post about spam on websites. I've tried a few other places before, but none were really appropriate.
So what is this site about? It's a place where I collect information about spam I encounter on the various websites I administer. So email spam is not something you'll usually see here (unless there's a connection to spam we also see on websites).
Of the sites I administer, geeklog.net (the homepage of the software that's used to run this very site) is the most popular target. The site is very busy, so fighting spam is also important to keep the server's load at bay. And this is also the reason I started "spam hunting".
A related issue that's covered here are bots and worms. Bots often misbehave and cause extra load and there are also some dubios bots around that are run by spammers.
Worms only got "popular" with the outbreak of the phpBB worm (dubbed "Santy") at the end of 2004 that tried to exploit a bug in the popular phpBB bulletin board software. It was quickly followed by "Spyki" (or "Spyski"), a more generic worm that attacked all PHP scripts and tried to find exploitable bugs by brute force.
To date, there doesn't seem to be a connection between spammers and those worms, but we've seen the same thing happen before with spam emails (worms infecting PCs which are then used to send spam) and I guess it's only a question of time before we'll see something similar on the web.
This site also discusses ways to track down spammers and how to complain to their hosting services and ISPs in the hope that they'll cancel their accounts.
And lastly, the site also keeps track of notorious spammers and notorious hosters. Maybe someone will be able to make use of the mounting evidence eventually ...
